Courtney Holbrooks is a freelance dancer and arts administrator based in New York City. She began her dance training at the age of three from Albemarle Academy of Dance. It was there where they trained for fifteen years until their high school graduation in 2019. They trained in ballet, modern, jazz, tap, contemporary, hip-hop, tumbling, and acting. In 2018, she attended UNC School of the Art's Contemporary Summer Dance Intensive where she was accepted to the year-round program. Courtney now has a BFA in Contemporary Dance and a minor in Arts Entrepreneurship since graduation in May of 2023. It is during their studies here that they learned from profound artists, Sean Sullivan, Brenda Daniels, Trish Casey, Ming-Lung Yang, Abby Yager, Ashley Lindsey, and Kira Blazek Ziaii. Courtney has performed works such as “Missa Brevis” by José Limón, “MO” by Trisha Brown and other works by Igal Perry, Shen-Wei, Gaspard Louis, and Mariana Oliveira. In 2021, she had the opportunity to study with Jon Bond, Sidra Bell, Alexandra Damiani, Norbert De La Cruz III, Dante Puleio, Jason Parsons, and Paige Amicon at the UNCSA Professional Studies Intensive. In the summer of 2022, they learned from Micaela Taylor, Maleek Washington, and Imre Van Opstal at BODYTRAFFIC’s professional summer program and Jacob Jonas the Company at Perry-Mansfield’s professional summer intensive.
Courtney is certified in Yoga & Ayurveda Center’s 200 Hour Yoga teacher training. She fell in love with the art of yoga in 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdown and has since applied these lessons to her current studies. She also has an interest in administration after serving as the head of the fundraising committee for UNCSA’s The Pluck Project and as ADF’s Program & Administration Intern. She currently works at the Executive Team Associate at Gibney Dance. While at ADF, she produced two student concerts including ADF’s first student film showing. Dance on film is another interest of Courtney’s. Her most recent film Isolate has been selected in LadyFest Charlotte and ADF’s Movies by Movers.
Courtney aspires to further her knowledge in dance, film, yoga instruction, and administration, aiming to use these different skills to share her passion for dance. Her long-term goal is to spread her love of contemporary dance in her home state, North Carolina by creating more opportunities to create, perform, and share work.
Artistic Statement
Dance makes it easy for me to understand others' feelings and my own. Conversation has been a consistent theme and a major source of inspiration for me. I love hearing other people’s thoughts, ideas, and stories and comparing them with my own experiences. I have never believed that I am the best with language, and it is difficult for me to articulate my ideas verbally. Drawing inspiration from verbal communication and translating into a language I do understand (dance) has helped me on both ends. I enjoy creating work about my conflicting emotions, and as I begin to make the work, these feelings begin to make more sense. My current artistic goal is to create more conversations. The older I get the more I realize how important it is to communicate with others. The more we share, the better we can understand one another, and the world around us. I want people to watch my work and ask questions or make comments that will shed new light on my ideas.
